Vioxx on 60 Minutes

CBS's 60 Minutes featured cardiovascular researcher Dr. Eric Topol, who argues that Merck was aware of the dangers of Vioxx by 2000. His conclusion is based on the analysis of Merck studies in 1998 and 1999, which show a five to sixfold increase in adverse cardiovascular problems, including heart attack and stroke among Vioxx users when compared to patients taking placebo or other arthritis drugs.

Also featured was Andy Birchfield, who is head of the Mass Torts Division with Beasley Allen Law Firm. The firm is heading up lawsuits against Merck. Beasley Allen were one of just a handful of law firms that had filed lawsuits prior to the withdrawal, filing their first lawsuit three years ago and now representing thousands of people in the case.
